Gene Simmons on file sharing

This article have been stirring up a lot of feelings on the web. Instead of doing what everyone else does and take quotes out of context I’ll just post the link to the whole thing (hint: the “goodies” is in the bottom).

Interview with Gene Simmons

No doubt this have become a really ugly discussion with two sides that I both dislike. The most stupid arguments since the theological discussions in early Christianity is being brought forward by these sides. To me it ultimately boils down to one moral question that you as an individual have to ask yourself:

“Is it OK for me to take something (physical or not) that someone else have created, regardless if the creator have put a price tag on it or not, just because I want it. I understand that all of these creators have put time and effort into their product, most of them have paid for being able to create it in the first place, and some of them pay to distribute it. Some of them make a living out of selling it, others try to make a living out of it or is partly making a living out of it”.

You may think it’s biased in tone or whatever. But this is the moral question to ask yourself, regardless if you’re a pirate or a pirate hunter.

Simmons is right. Ignoring the fact that someone owns the copyright to a song doesnt mean you can just go ahead and take it. Thats like saying, I’m gonna pretend there isnt a law that says I shouldnt kill your ass, because I want to, and therefore its okay. Well its not okay.
I might be biased. Im a professional musician.

    Well, everyone’s biased ;)

The more I talk to people, the more I get the impression that only people who make a living out of music in one way or another is actually against pirating. Last night I was in a room with four middle-aged persons, one in his early twenties and a kid at around the age of 12-13. They all pretty much agreed on that they shouldn’t pay for music and just download it for free. Someone asked “what does it cost to download a song on iTunes?”, when he got the reply he responded “you can’t pay that! I’ll download it for free!”.
